Millrite u.s. Burke backlash?
I have recently purchased a mid 1960's us Burke millrite. However the (y) table screw backlash is over . 025". I was able to find the split nut on the X axis and was able to reduce that free play to under. 005". The manual I downloaded from the internet is not very discriptive. This machine has a power feed on both the table and the quil.

Powermatic millrite burke MVN Vertical Milling Machine 8×36 Table. The head is r-8 like a Bridgeport includes set of collets, misc end mills, knee handle and wrench. Table is in decent shape except for the large mill mark down the center see photo. The ways are decen with minor scratches some scrappings still visible.

I have a Powermatic Millrite (1979) and it is a good machine. Mine is 7x27 table. That millrite in the ebay link has 2 features not generally found on millrites. The knuckle ram (2 axis of rotation) most only have one axis of rotation at the head. And an original coolant system, well at least the pan anyway.

HI, I am looking to buy a Burke Millrite vertical mill and am looking at a model MV1. I've also seen MVN models for sale and wonder what the difference between them is. The quill feed is by a hand wheel, not a lever; I've read somewhere that wheel feed is better for brass and that is 99% of what I work with. Runout on the x is .012, y is .015 ...

I've got a 1974 MVN (powermatic/burke) and total machine depth is 48". Mine is stuffed into a corner and it's just about 5' from the corner to the front of the machine. The table on mine is an 8x32" and at max travel in each X direction the handles just about contact the walls, which is why the machine is about 12" from the corner.
