The value of FGD gypsum to gypsum users depends on the chemical and physical properties and delivery cost compared to supplies of natural gypsum. The ability of the wallboard facility to accept FGD gypsum without the need for significant plant modifications will also influence the price they will be prepared to offer.
At the same time, production of FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurization) gypsum continues to be stymied by shortfalls in investments of US$13 billion necessary to build FGD plants. In the light of the scenarios outlined above, Oman has emerged as the single most important supply source for gypsum.
